Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator - A Closer Look
I got this portable home generator from UPS today (I felt a little sorry for the UPS driver, it's a little heavy). I took the package, opened it, and it was double boxed, which is an excellent start. After opening the second box, there came my brand spanking new generator!
Indeed, it's small. BUT don't let its size deceive you! It comes with a 2800 watt generator and a 4000 watt max output. Having used other generators back then, coming with different shapes and sizes, the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator is more than enough to keep many small homes' fridge, a couple of lights, a TV, etc. powered up.
(BUT don't count on it to power up your dryer or electric stove. The demands of such equipments are too much for this generator to handle)
Getting Started With The Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator
I filled oil on the engine and poured in a gallon of gas in the tank. I switched the gas petcock on, flipped on the chock, and finally pulled the starter - within 3 pulls, the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator is up and running!
Everything about it is smooth - it went without a hiccup for an hour or so until I decided to turn it off. I connected a couple of stuff to it while it was on. The unit's voltage meter was at a constant 110 volts and everything is running fine. The generator is NOT even showing a load! Even my 2 horse power table saw motor didn't pull a lot when I started it.
The Generator's Build
The looks and build of the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator is typical Chinese. HOWEVER, unlike it's cheaper cousins, this one seems to be very well made (that's especially true when you consider the cost).
You could find a pop out filter located in the fuel tank (which is always welcome) as well as an accessory pack that includes 2 110 volt plugs, a 220 volt 3 prong plug, coupled with a spark plug wrench. As for the build and looks, I'm giving the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator 2 thumbs up!
The Noise Level
The Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator is amazingly quiet for a generator. I find it easily tolerable for outside use. I borrowed a friend's generator made in the United States. It was running much louder than the Blue Max generator. With my home's door shut and with the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator running outside, one can't hear it running.
Too HEAVY!
Well, unless you are a body builder or if you have a very strong back, I don't recommend picking up the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator all by yourself. It's pretty heavy and having a wheel set up should help you move this thing around.
Final Thoughts On The Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator
You get what you pay for - that's always true and this home and portable generator is no exception. I'm not expecting it to be at par with US made ones, which cost twice as much.
HOWEVER, I think that with good maintenance, the Blue Max GEN4000B Portable Generator could serve me well for a couple of years. This is highly recommended!
